Flavors of Puglia: Osteria Piazzetta Cattedrale


Orna O’Reilly and I worked up a bit of an appetite today as we made our way along the ancient travertine-paved streets of Ostuni — our adopted hometown in the Salento region of Puglia in southeastern Italy — to the top of the centro storico (historic center).


Passing by La Città Bianca‘s (The White City) 15th century Cathedral of the Assumption, we entered nearby Osteria Piazzetta Cattedrale to a warm embrace and greeting from Roberto Marino, the affable owner of this superlative kitchen.


With knife, fork and wine goblet at the ready, we took our places at a table-for-two for a long, leisurely, slow-food lunch. It’s what we do here in Puglia on a Sunday.


The mouthwatering seafood-based dishes — appetizers, first and second courses, along with desserts — were prepped by Chef Marilea Santoro, plated by Roberto and poured by Francesco.


And, in the glass? Five Roses, a wonderful Negroamaro rosato from the Leone de Castris Estate, a winery that dates all the back to 1665.

Sorry you couldn’t join us, but go ahead and enjoy a virtual nibble and sip.

      1. No walk today, as I’ve been packing and getting ready to leave for California tomorrow. I’ll take a virtual walk, though, and that will take care of virtual calories.
