Venice, the mysterious lady behind the carnevale mask, really needs no introduction.
Without a doubt, La Serenissima (The Most Serene) is one of the most recognizable, beautiful, romantic and popular cities in the world. Don’t believe me? Just ask the 20+ million tourists that visit her annually.
She’s the home of Casanova, Vivaldi and Commissario Brunetti; ornate palazzi (palaces) and world-class museums; landmarks like St. Mark’s Square and Cathedral, Doges Palace, Teatro La Fenice and Ponte Rialto; not to mention colorful, hand-blown glass, 3,000+ calli (streets and alleyways), 400+ bridges, and the ombra (glass of wine) and cicchetti (appetizers) enjoyed daily by gli anonimi veneziani (the anonymous venetians).
To drink her all in, the City of Canals is best experienced on foot, but the views aren’t too bad aboard one of the inexpensive vaporetti (waterbuses) that glide their way up and down the city’s iconic, serpentine-shaped thoroughfare: the Grand Canal.
