Buongiorno: Breaking the Fast

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.”

Buongiorno: Breaking the Fast | ©Tom Palladio ImagesHow many times have you heard or read that statement? Countless, I’m sure. And that pronouncement isn’t going away anytime soon, because, according to innumerable medical and nutritional experts, it’s true. Breakfast IS the most important meal of the day. I won’t bore you with all of the details, but studies indicate that people who skip breakfast are disproportionately likely to have concentration, metabolism and weight problems. Not on my watch!

You can skimp on lunch or dinner, but don’t turn a blind eye to breakfast. Next to a nice shower, it’s the best way to jump-start the morning.

I have family, friends and friends-of-friends back in the U-S-of-A who simply blow off breakfast claiming, “I’m not hungry so early in the morning.” They just throw something into a to-go cup, rush out the door and merge into the crowd and make their way to work or wherever their day begins. For me, as soon as I wake up and my feet hit the bedroom floor, I’m hungry. I don’t give it much thought on how to remedy my morning food craving, as more often than not I pretty much have the same Italian-style prima colazione (breakfast) day in, day out. I used to enjoy big American-style breakfasts – eggs, bacon, toast, pancakes, etc. – but now I’ve adjusted my morning ritual to a modified continental to get my “Vespa” running. It’s what I routinely throw together after I throw on my sweats.

  1. Excellent post and images Tom. Took off for my kitchen after reading this. I never skip breakfast either. But, I must start my day with a cup of delicious coffee first before I do anything. Coffee first, then a project or two. A project or two then coffee ruins the rest of my day.

  2. Yes I always have breakfast. what is it they say… Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Queen and Dinner like a Pauper…or something along those lines.

  3. I’m with you Tom, I LOOOOVVVVVE breakfast and wouldn’t miss it for the world!! Your shots made me hungry just looking at them 🙂 Good work!

  4. Even your images of a cup of coffee are gorgeous. Are you just constantly taking pictures, or, like me, have you found that you have way too much time on your hands?

    1. Paige — I’m always packin’ a camera and shooting away, whether meandering outside or staging shots in my “studio.” I take pride in all the photos I post along with wordsmithing the right narrative to enhance the frames, and vice-versa. I’ve got plenty of time on my hands, but I use most of every day shooting and writing; it’s my life apparently. Glad you liked the post, and especially the cups of coffee.

  5. Hmmm, okay, okay… guess I had better head to the kitchen for that important meal of the day.. grumble grumble.. yes, I’m one of those who struggle with breakfast, yet know how important it is. Thanks for the service announcement / reminder Tom! 🙂

  6. I’m a fruit for breakfast person. If I ate crostata or brioche every morning I’d be the size of a house. But I agree, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. 🙂

  7. The “Breakfast of Champions”, with skimmed milk.
Your Italian pastry’s look so mouth watering, it makes me want to print the picture and eat it.
