Red October Pizza: The Jon Jay

It took extra innings to get it done, but the St. Louis Cardinals opened the Major League Baseball (MLB) National League Championship Series (NLDS) with a 3-2 win Friday over the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers and now lead the best-of-seven series 1-0.

The sellout crowd of 46,691 inside Busch Stadium exploded way past the midnight hour when the Redbirds’ Carlos Beltran — the absolute best postseason player in MLB history — hit a walk-off low liner into right field in the bottom of the 13th inning that sent Daniel Descalso racing across home plate.

Game-2 of the NLDS, pitting Dodgers’ pitching ace Clayton Kershaw against Cards’ rookie sensation Michael Wacha, gets underway Saturday at 4:07 p.m. on TBS. But, which pie will pop out next from the oven? Let’s go upstairs for the lineup call by the PA announcer.

Like its namesake, known by his teammates and hometown fans as The Chief Justice, this flatbread pie commands respect from the ROP bench:  a large Piadina Romagna covered in Stracchino cheese and topped with cooked ham, rounds of Mozzarella di Bufala, artichoke hearts, mushrooms, red bell peppers and black olives.

And, we’ll compliment the goodness of our ROP in bianco (no tomato sauce) with a velvety-smooth red wine from the vineyards that surround Lake Garda in Italy’s Veneto region: Cantina di Soave’s 2012 Cadis Bardolino DOC.

    1. Unfortunately, I leave tomorrow for two weeks — not on a long pizza delivery — and will be far away from my kitchen. So, The Jon Jay will be it, unless I eat pizza along the way, photograph it, then post it. Hm. I’ll think about it.

      1. Have a great trip. Where are you headed? Wherever it is, I know I’ll see great photos and enjoy wonderful food (albeit virtually) of it.

        Safe travels,

      2. I’m off for a two-week spa treatment, doctor recommended (nothing serious), to the Terme Comano up in the Brenta Dolomites overlooking Lake Garda. Two-a-day therapeutic hot springs baths — just like the Romans of old — along with three squares a day, and plenty of great wines. Don’t worry, I’ll be blogging all about it. This will be my first spa treatment.

  1. These pies just get better and better! This has to be my favorite; I love artichokes.
Rest up, the spa sounds quite lovely, especially since it includes wine.
