A Milk Run down to the Tree Stump

I held off for as long as I could then I caved, threw on a jacket, raced out of the apartment and hustled up the street with my tongue hangin’ out.

For me, there’s no better place on earth to satisfy my cravings than il Ceppo (the Tree Stump), my go-to gastronomia-enoteca along the Corso Palladio in downtown Vicenza.

Due to summer travels, I stayed away much too long, but as soon as I stepped inside it was as if the prodigal son had returned with high fives all around.

Dove sei stato? (Where have you been?)

Ci sei mancato! (We missed you!)

Etc., etc., etc.

After catching up with proprietor-sommelier Maria Giovanna (I call her Mary Jo; she likes that), I started drooling over the freshly-made delicacies on display inside the lengthy glass-enclosed case.

When the dust settled, I walked out of the shop carrying its signature plastic tote sporting the bright red letters filled with five-star, freshly-made, ready-to-eat, creamy pasta dishes: Pasticcio ai funghi porcini (baked lasagna with porcini mushrooms) and Pasticcio bianche con verdure (baked lasagne with a pork- veal ragù and veggies).

Mmmm.

They say you should never go grocery shopping when you’re hungry and they’re probably right; but, who cares, especially when the “tree stump” is just a short milk run away.

  1. You’re killing me here Tom, this post is just cruel :-(. And BTW the photos are terrific. I love the simple cork and the fork/empty plate. You must be an exercise junkie with all that fab food around and a thin waistline!

    1. Tina — Glad you liked this foodie set, especially the wine cork and the empty plate frames. ALL GONE. I don’t exercise, other than my fingers banging out blog posts, but I only eat twice a day. I’d probably drop more weight if I did get into a daily exercise regimen. Some day.

  2. What a fun post. I could smell your supper as you were eating it. 🙂 Naughty that you didn’t share, however.

  3. Tom, you must have waddled off to bed that night and had either amazing or scary dreams. 🙂 How fun to have a place like that close by.

  4. We have several Il Ceppo’s here in my neighborhood; only unfortunately they are just that…tree stumps in the fields 🙂 Oh well, your posts will see me through until I can make it into the City.
