I’m sure you’ve heard the Italian expression al fresco. It means out in the open air.
When we dine outdoors with family and friends, or sip an aperitivo at a sidewalk cafe without a care in the world, we do so al fresco. It’s one of the cornerstones of the Bel Paese’s way of life known as la dolce vita (the sweet life).
An almost legendary era of modern Italian history, la dolce vita to us fortunate “outsiders” represents the ultimate expression of a laid-back, relaxed lifestyle — a lifestyle that beckons us to stop often and long enough to smell those proverbial sunflowers al fresco.
