Daylight’s Last Breath

In the Broadway musical-turned-Hollywood box-office hit, Fiddler on the Roof, one of its signature songs is Sunrise, Sunset. Tevye the milkman calls upon all of his emotions when he leads the refrain and sings: Sunrise, sunset, swiftly fly the years.

The Golden Hour | ©Tom Palladio ImagesAs Cheri Lucas of WordPress noted in this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge, the overture and curtain-closing light that swiftly bookends daytime is known as The Golden Hour. It’s that period when the sun lies between the horizon and 6 degrees above it, and accounts for the speed of the transition from daytime to nighttime around the world at different times of the year.

The Golden Hour is that magical, gone-in-60-min. window when photographers of all levels do their very best to greet the new day at sunrise and waive goodbye to it at sunset with their cameras.

Maybe it’s just me, but there’s a note of sadness hidden within a breathtaking sunset that Mother Nature occasionally paints for us. It’s what I call daylight’s last breath. Here are a few sighs that I managed to capture during The Golden Hour before it swiftly disappeared into the darkness.

Tom swapped his hometown St. Louis Cardinals' baseball cap in the United States for a Borsalino and he now hangs his "cappello" in the Puglia region of southeastern Italy. A veteran print and broadcast journalist, with well-worn passports that have got him into and out of 50 countries and counting, Tom fell in love with the "Bel Paese" years ago. As he notes, "I'm inspired by the beauty I find in all things that are very, very old, and reliving history, or at least meandering along the travertine and cobblestone that were laid down over a thousand years ago and just looking up and marveling at what occupies the space still today, really gets my 'Vespa' running." Tom has a good eye behind the lens and is a graphic storyteller, but he'll let you decide as he keeps his camera batteries fully charged and the posts flowing from his creative hideaway in the hills overlooking Ostuni.
