Only a leisurely 15-minute drive from our “home away from home” sits Libourne, a city in the Gironde department of the Aquitaine region of France’s sprawling southwest. Labeled the wine-making capital of northern Gironde, Libourne is just over the hill, through the vineyards and around the bend from Saint-Émilion and Pomerol.
A visit to Libourne would not be complete without a stroll through it’s bustling open-air market.
Unfolding three times a week — Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays — it snakes its way along the side streets leading to and all around the main square that fronts the ornate town hall.
In addition, Libourne has a daily indoor market, too, in the Place Abel Surchamp. Here, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the plethora of gastronomic delights on display just waiting to be placed inside your market tote: fruits, exotic vegetables, spices, herbs, cheese, fish, fresh meats and salamis, and the region’s irresistible duck foie gras.

Foie gras has been banned here in California. They worry about the stupidest things over here, instead of taking care of serious problems the country has. Beautiful photos Tom.
So I’ve heard. Foie gras here in SW France is a daily staple for the locals.
I know, French will never abolish its use.

Your photos look amazing. Can you tell me what times the Place Abel Surchamp every day market is open. We’re arriving in the Bordeaux on a Monday and will have to shop for our week at our villa. We’ll definitely go back to the one of the other day markets as we’re only staying about ten minutes away. Thank you for your knowledge.
