Without realizing it, I’ve quietly accumulated 518 subscribers who have signed up for email alerts whenever The Palladian Traveler posts something new.
Had I been paying attention, I would’ve thrown confetti, dropped balloons and let loose with some canon fire when I hit the 5×100 mark. Instead, I’m making this pronouncement, sans fanfare, on the heels of adding recipient #518, whoever you may be.
So, why am I calling Schenectady, a city located in the Mohawk Valley region of upstate New York? Because, many moons ago, I used to live in “the clearing beyond the pines” — that’s what Schenectady means in the Mohawk Indian language — and it’s part of Area Code 518.
Just in case you’re curious, Area Code 518 was established as one of the original telephone area codes way back in 1947.
Five-One-Eight covers 24 counties and 1,200 postal zip codes. At last count, there were 494 landlines and 100 wireless exchanges serviced by 47 different carriers.
Area Code 518 is the largest area code in the Empire State, and extends from the eastern reaches of the aforementioned Mohawk Valley to the Vermont border, and from the Canadian border down to Albany, the state capital.
One of state’s original five area codes, 518 has never been split or overlaid, and, according to Ma Bell, will remain intact at least until 2019.
Thank you email follower #518 and the other 517 in front of you; and, a big shout-out to “the clearing beyond the pines” in the bigger Five-One-Eight.
Hopefully, I’ll shoot off some fireworks when I reach the 750th email-subscriber milestone. If so, I’ll also be placing a call to someone in Jiangmen, where its area code, inside China, is 7-5-0.

Melanee — As my Cowardly Lion compatriot would say, “Aw shucks, I’m speechless.” Thanks for the BMA nom and for appreciating my lens craft. I’ll accept your kind gesture in an upcoming post. In the meantime, if you have the time, here’s another link to a bunch of my frames that you may or may not have seen: https://webertj.see.me. Cheers! Tom
