Solid Gold Fridays – Pink Martini: City of Night

At the end of last week’s Solid Gold Fridays post I opened up the “all-request line” and encouraged anyone interested to submit a record title that he/she would like to see showcased on a future edition of SGF.

Well, one fellow blogger came forward with a request, and today’s SGF post will be a “ladies choice” based upon her request.

The SGF spotlight shines on Pink Martini, a “small orchestra” of 10-12 members from Portland, Oregon (USA) whose musical style crosses over a host of genres and is classified as “world” music.

Formed in 1974, PM is the brainchild of Thomas Lauderdale, its founder, and China Forbes, the group’s lead singer-songwriter.

PM has been performing its multilingual repertoire on concert stages and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Northern Africa, Australia and New Zealand, South America and North America.

The group is so international in style and popularity that Lauderdale has stated that if the United Nations had a house band, he would hope that PM had the gig.

In 2007, PM came out of the recording studios with their highest ranked album, Hey Eugene. This CD peaked at No. 30 in the U.S. market, thanks in part to one of the 11 tracks on the album, City of Night.

Because you asked for it — and you know who you are — we’re going to play it on this edition of Solid Gold Fridays.

Here’s Pink Martini and City of Night

CITY OF NIGHT

Well the sun’s going down
With its deep amber light
Embracing the town as we fall into night
To the silvery sound as the birds fly away
Getting ready for love
Getting out of the day

It is the city of night
It is the city of night
Leave the worries of day behind
And dream a new dream tonight

All the lands are a glow
All the lids painted red
And you wish you could take
That last thing you said
Well the night is a drum
Singing songs of delight
But when dawn comes along
Love is lost in the light

But in the city of night
Oh, in the city of night
Leave the troubles of day behind
And dream a new dream tonight
