This is a silhouetted view of the Ligurian Sea from the portico of the little Church of St. Peter on the cliff just above the Byron Grotto at Porto Venere, Italy. Supposedly, 18th century English Romanticism poet Lord George Gordon Byron, an excellent swimmer, dove into the choppy sea from there and made his way in high winds to Lerici, a distance of 8 km (4.8 mi), to visit his fellow poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Shelley later drowned, just shy of his 30th birthday, in those very same waters returning home from Livorno (Leghorn) by boat. His death, coupled with the commune of poets who frequented the area back in the day, is why the Golfo di Lerici (Golf of Lerici) is nicknamed Golfo dei Poeti (Golf of Poets).
